Whats New At Cools?

Hi Everyone, As most of you will recognise me from markets and open events on the farm. I would just like to say that I am no longer at Cools Farm, and have moved to greener pastures, so I no longer have any involvement in the business at Cools. I would like to thank everyone for their support over the years and to all that have contacted me with your support at this time since leaving, it is much appreciated. No excuse! You can’t miss the new farm shop sign! Pop in, the freezers are fully stocked, joints, steaks and everything else in between!

What does the Quad bike sound mean? = fresh grass! Mob grazing plays a part of the holistic management of our grassland. The cattle get a fresh patch of grass every 1-2 days (depending on size and quantity of animals. There are 81 head of cattle in this group and they get a new paddock every day). It’s also super helpful when checking them because you can count them much easier as they enter the new paddock and spot any problems such as any lameness. By mob grazing we are increasing organic matter, improving the soil fertility leading to better management, meaning better water-holding capacity when it’s dry and freer draining when it’s wet, and of course more nutrients! #MobGrazing #RedPoll #OrganicRedPoll #RegenAg #regenerativeagriculture

Earlier in June, we saw off Tom’s first homebred Bull, Cools Aladdin 🧞‍♂️ He’s got an amazing view from his bedroom down on the Jurassic Coast, with some lovely ladies for company!

When all the ewes and lambs are in one place you forget how many there are.. (and how very noisy they are!) Lambs are growing well and some have stated to drop fleece along with the ewes! #SheddingSheep #Exlana

Very busy day today! Tagging, DNA Sampling and Vaccinating with Heptavac P Plus… all made just that little bit simpler with this amazing little bit of kit.. the lamb Shute! Laurence puts the lambs up on the Shute. Tom is Tagging and Vaccinating. Emily is taking DNA Samples. And Tim is recording all the information. By using DNA Parentage we are helping Exlana by discovering traits which helps us create genotypes from previously recorded data. Creating these genotypes will aid us in the future to selectively choose breeding stock for specific traits and to improve the breed. #Exlana #GeneticsNotCosmetics

Vetch seems to be a firm favourite this spring! We don’t name our calves by the letter of the year like most herds do, we name all our heifer calves after their mums, Vetch’s mum is called Buttercup.. so we’ve kept to the theme of Wildflowers! Early start today for the Sunday of our Lambing Open Weekend! - The weather still looks fantastic and is getting hot already! The Cow-calf dairy is in full swing, we’re milking 15 cows. The idea of the Cow-Calf Dairy is that we milk once a day (early morning) and the cow keeps her responsibility of rearing her own calf. #EthicalDairy Our #Raw milk will be available to purchase later on in the summer!

Sometimes they need a helping hand.. orange lambs are a sign of a difficult birth. The meconium (first poo) is what the orange colour is, the meconium is expelled during birth which makes the lambs a yellow or orange colour. #Lambing #Lambing2024

Ewes on the Moove 😆 There’s no doubt in saying Cools Farm is WET and after all the rain we’ve had lately it is indeed very wet!! So we have sent the ewes up to Lower Pertwood for some dry grazing whilst they go the Tups and they will stay in the downs until they are ready to come back for lambing in April. The steers are happy this morning!

We are celebrating 2 YEARS of starting our share-farming journey at Cools Farm! Michaelmas marked 2 years of myself and Tom moving to Cools Farm to start this exciting adventure of what we call Cools Farm Organics. Not only have we gained the sheer experience of having our own farm and expanding our acreage, our pedigree Red Polls and the establishment of our new flock of Exlana’s, we have gained what feels like a third set of parents, Maggie and Quentin. Who are there to support us through the rough and the smooth and have set us up for life. (Also in a beautiful new build on the farm!) We have found something very rare, the 4 of us feel strongly to the way that farming should progress, farming regeneratively for a sustainable future, taking part in high health schemes for our animals, especially to protect the heritage of our Red Polls. Rotational grazing is so important! .. in this case paddock grazing in sections. Giving longer rest periods to the pasture not only has the benefit of better grass growth, but it improves the soil health within the development of larger roots, and improves the soil fertility through the quantity of organic matter that’s the cows leave behind! As you can see behind the steers they have waisted absolutely nothing, taking advantage of what there is to offer, from the current strip they have grazed and look what they are going into, this field is packed full of Red Clover which they absolutely love! Something we’ve known for a good few weeks now, so I think it’s time to share the good news.. Tom was shortlisted in his nominated category in the South West Farmer Awards, and now has been made a FINALIST! 🥳 We are incredibly proud of you, you work so so hard and at 23 running the Cools Farm Organics enterprise. Even if you don’t come out on top I am so proud of you for even becoming a finalist and for what you have achieved and made our life become at such a young age. We have had masses of interest for milk from our beautiful Red Polls, the main factor of Cools being a Cow-Calf Dairy where the cow keeps her calf until the natural weaning stage. Whilst we are in the trial stages at the moment, we are unable to sell any milk (or other milk based produce) to the public, we are currently utilising the milk ourselves until we have a flush of heifers in the spring, Cools Cow-Calf Dairy is something we hope to unveil in spring 2024. As our customers we would like your thoughts on setting up a Cow-Calf dairy where the cow rears her calf naturally throughout her whole lactation and we milk the surplus milk once a day, just like nature intended? Please leave your feedback below. All of us at Cools Farm ventured off to Fir Farm in Lower Swell yesterday for the Red Poll Cattle society farm walk. The Red Polls are a dual purpose breed meaning that they are great for all systems from suckler cows to dairy units. Fir Farm have a dairy herd of around 32 cows and produce a fantastic quality organic milk they they sell in vending machines at the end of their farm drive. Milking Cows at Cools has been something that we as a team have discussed for a lengthy period of time. There’s the opportunity to divulge into yogurts, cheese, butter and ice cream for the milk that our cattle produce.
